Materials Needed

Paper: One A4 sheet (can be any color or pattern).

Scissors: Optional, if you want to trim the paper before folding.

Paper Size Options

A standard A4 paper size (8.3 inches x 11.7 inches or 21 cm x 29.7 cm) works perfectly for this envelope design.

You could also use U.S. letter paper.

Paper Type & GSM

Choose lightweight paper for easy folding, ideally around 70-120 GSM. Colored or patterned paper can add a special touch.

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want your leaf to be facing up. Arrange the paper to sit horizontally.

Step 2: Fold the bottom left corner up to meet the top edge.

Step 3: Fold the top right corner and bottom right corner to the left to match the edge of the flap on the left.

Step 4: Fold the top left point to the right to meet the point of the top right triangle.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.

Step 6: Unfold the left triangle.

Step 7: Flip your paper over from top to bottom.

Step 14: For this step, we will be folding along the creases we made in steps 10 to 13. The name of this fold is an acordion fold.

Alternate between mountain folds (making a peak in the paper) and valley folds (similar to mountain folds but this time creating a "v" shape in the paper). You should end up with an accordion shape once you have finished folding.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

  • Misalignment: Ensure all edges are aligned before making folds for a neat finish.
  • Folds Not Creased Well: Take your time to crease each fold firmly for a polished look.

  • Use green or brown paper for a more natural leaf appearance.
  • Experiment with origami paper that has designs or textures.
  • Add embellishments like washi tape or stickers to enhance the design.
