Paper Type & GSM
For this origami heart box, use lightweight paper or origami paper for easy folding. A paper weight of around 70-120 GSM is recommended for the best results, allowing for clean folds without being too bulky.
For a medium sized box or a large sized box, use lightweight cardstock (around 120gsm) for a sturdier box.
Instructions
For the lid you will need a square sheet of paper that is 0.40 inches (1cm) larger than the base sheet.
E.g. If your base square sheet is 6 inches x 6 inches (15cm x 15cm) your lid square sheet should be 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches (16cm x 16cm).
We will start with making the base of the box.
Step 1: Start with the color you want on the outside of the box facing up.
Step 2: Fold the bottom edge to the top edge.
Step 3: Unfold the previous step.
Step 4: Fold the right edge to the left edge.
Step 5: Unfold previous step.
Step 6: Flip the paper over and arrange it so it sits like a diamond.
Step 7: Fold the bottom corner up to meet the centre point.
Step 8: Repeat previous step on the remaining corners.
Step 9: Fold the bottom edge to the middle point.
Step 10: Fold the top edge to meet the middle point.
Step 11: Unfold the previous two (2) steps.
Step 12: Fold the right and left edges to the middle point.
Step 13: Unfold previous step.
Step 14: Unfold the right and left sections completely.
Step 15: Once more, fold the top and bottom edges to the middle (use the creases that already exist).
Step 16: Lift the edges you just folded inwards up 90 degrees.
Step 17: Gently lift the left most point upwards. You will find that the existing sides will naturally collapse on themselves.
Step 18: Fold the point down into the box and match the point with the centre.
Step 19: Repeat steps 17 and 18 for the right.
Step 20: Gently push in one of the corners so that it’s point matches the middle point of the box. Then re crease edges.
Step 21: Completed heart base.
Step 22: Repeat previous steps for the lid, but this time, using a square sheet of paper that is 0.40 inches (1cm) larger than what you used for the base sheet.
E.g if the base paper is 6x6 inches (15cm x 15cm) use 6.5x6.5 inches (16cm x 16cm) for the lid.
