Materials Needed

A rectangular piece of paper that is twice as wide as it is tall.

Example sizes:

  • 10 inches x 5 inches (25cm x 12cm)
  • 8 inches x 4 inches (20cm x 10cm)
  • 6 inches x 3 inches (15cm x 7.5cm)

For example, you can cut a square sheet of paper that is 6x6 inches (15cm x 15cm) in half horizontally to create a size of 6 inches (15 cm) x 3 inches (7.5 cm).

Paper Type & GSM

For this project, a lightweight paper (80-100 gsm) works best, as it folds easily and maintains its shape while allowing you to achieve delicate details in the heart.

Instructions

For these origami blossom hearts you will need a rectangle sheet of paper that is twice as long as it is wide.

E.g. If you are using 6 inch (15cm) wide paper you need it to be 3 inches (7.5cm) tall.

Step 1: Start with the color you want your heart to be facing down. Arrange it to sit horizontally.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half from left to right.

Step 3: Unfold previous step.

Step 4: Fold the bottom left corner to meet the centre crease.

Step 1 continued to 4 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 5: Fold the bottom right corner to meet the centre crease.

Step 6: Unfold previous 2 steps.

Step 7: Fold the top left corner to meet the centre crease.

Step 8: Fold the top right corner to meet the centre crease.

Step 5 continued to 8 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 9: Unfold previous 2 steps.

Step 10: Working on the left side - collapse the paper down towards the centre along the existing crease lines. Press flat.

Step 9 continued to 10 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 11: Repeat previous step for the right side.

Step 12: Take the top layer of the left triangle and fold both the top and bottom points to meet the left point.

Step 13: Repeat previous step for the right side.

Step 14: Gently open out one of the small triangle flaps (that you made in the previous 2 steps) and squash it down so the tip meets the centre fold line. This will form a small square.

Step 11 continued to 14 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 15: Repeat previous step for remaining triangle flaps.

Step 16: Fold the inner corners of the small bottom left square in to meet the centre crease of the same square.

Step 14 continued to 16 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 17: Repeat previous step for remaining squares.

Step 18: Working on any of the small flaps you made in the previous 2 steps, gently open it and squash it down on itself.

Step 19: Repeat previous step for remaining small flaps.

Step 17 continued to 19 for folding a blossom origami heart.

Step 20: Flip your paper over from left to right.

Step 21: Fold the top point down to meet the bottom.

Step 22: Fold the left and right points inward slightly.

Step 23: Flip your paper over. Completed origami blossom heart.

Step 20 continued to 23 for folding a blossom origami heart.
