Note: If you want a more polished look for your rose, use paper that is the same color on both sides. For this tutorial we have used paper that is white on one side and colored on the other to make it easier to show how to make this paper rose.
Stem length can vary depending on how your roll it.
Paper GSM Guide:
- Use 80-100 GSM paper for delicate, soft-looking roses.
- Avoid overly thick cardstock as it can be difficult to shape into petals.
- You could use origami paper for smaller roses and cut them to size.
Instructions
Making the Rose Petals
Using your 6 pieces of colored paper
Step 1: Start with the color you want your petals to be facing down. Arrange the paper to sit horizontally.
Step 2: Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge.
Step 3: Unfold previous step.
Step 4: Fold both the bottom left and right corners up to meet the middle crease.
Step 5: Repeat previous step for the top corners.
Step 6: Fold both the top and bottom edges in to meet the middle crease.
Step 7: Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge.
Step 8: Completed rose petal. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for remaining colored paper. You will end up with 6 folded petals.
Making the Leaves
Using your 3 pieces of green paper
Making the leaves is similar to making the rose petals.
Step 1: Start with the color you want your leaves to be facing down.
Step 7: Flip your paper over from left to right.
Step 8: Fold the bottom edge to meet the top edge. Completed leaf.
Step 9: Repeat steps 1 to 8 for remaining green paper. You will end up with 3 folded leaves.
Making the Stem
Using your biggest sheet of green paper.
Step 1: Arrange the paper to sit slightly on a diagonal and have the color side facing down.
Step 2: Place the craft stick (or skewer) slightly above the bottom left corner of the paper.
Step 3: Wrap the paper firmly around the craft stick and then continue rolling the paper around the stick until you nearly reach the end of the paper.
Step 4: Apply some glue at the open end of the paper and then roll the paper over the remaining paper. Allow the glue to dry and remove the craft stick.
Step 5: Using scissors, trim the top of the stem so it is flat. Then, cut 4 deep and evenly spaced slits (about 1cm) into the top of the stem.
Step 6: Using your fingers, spread out the slits. This will be what you attach to the rose head.
Step 7: Completed stem.
Putting the Rose Together
Step 1: Take two of the rose petals and insert one into the other.
Step 2: Take one of the leaves and place it into the two rose petals.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the remaining petals and leaves.
Step 4: Place the rose petals side by side.
Step 5: Wrap a mini elastic hair band around the middle of the petals to hold them in place. If you don’t have a hair band, you could use a bit of string.
Step 6: Spread out the petals to form a star like shape as shown.
Step 7: Flip the petals over so that the petal color is on top.
Step 8: Carefully peel back the top layer of petals towards the middle in a clockwise direciton. Be careful not to tear your paper.
Step 9: Repeat previous step for the second layer of petals.
Step 10: Repeat previous step for the last layer, which will be the leaves. The position of the leaves is up to you. You could flatten them out, curve them up or curve them down.
Step 11: Using a small craft stick (skewer or toothpick), curl back the petals and leaves, working from the outside in.
Step 12: Using glue (we recommend using a hot glue gun because it holds the rose together better) apply glue to the bottom of the rose head.
Step 13: Attach the top of the stem of the rose to the rose head. Hold the stem in place while the glue dries.
Step 14: Completed paper rose. Optional: Trim the bottom of the stem for a more polished look.
Tips For Success
When peeling back your petals, be careful not to tear them. If you have a slight tear in your petal, you could add a bit of tape (ideally to the inside so you don’t notice the tape as much).
Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations
- You can never go wrong with vibrant red paper for a traditional Valentine’s Day or romantic bouquet. Pair with green stems for a timeless look.
- Use pastel shades like pink, lavender, or peach for spring crafts, Easter celebrations, or bridal showers. These colors add a light and cheerful touch to any bouquet or arrangement.
- Choose bold colors like yellow, orange, or magenta for a fun and modern twist. These work beautifully for summer parties or as eye-catching home decor.
- Shake up your roses by using metallic or foil paper in gold, silver, or bronze for Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or upscale events. They add a sophisticated sparkle to your craft.
- Opt for polka dots, floral prints, or other designs for a playful vibe. Patterned paper is ideal for kids’ crafts or adding a unique touch to gift wrapping.
- Experiment with textured paper like handmade sheets or cardstock. Thicker paper like cardstock makes your roses more durable, while lightweight origami paper allows for finer details.
- Mix and Match: Combine different colors and sizes to create a diverse bouquet. For example, mix red, white, and pink roses for Mother’s Day or blend orange and purple for a striking Halloween centerpiece.
- Miniature Roses: Use smaller sheets of paper to craft delicate roses for embellishing gift tags, cards, or scrapbooks.
