Materials Needed

• Lightweight square paper, such as origami paper (in your choice of colors), we recommend using 6x6" (15cm x 15cm) paper for a medium sized tulip head.
• Green paper (for the stem and leaf)
• Thin craft stick or long skewer
• Scissors (for cutting stems and leaves)
• Glue (to attach leaves and stems)

Instructions

Making the Tulip Head

Using the colored square sheet

Step 1: Start with the color you want your tulip to be facing down.

Step 2: Fold the bottom edge to meet the top edge.

Step 3: Unfold previous step.

Step 4: Fold the left edge to meet the right edge.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.

Step 6: Fold the top left corner down to meet the bottom right corner.

Step 7: Unfold previous step.

Step 8: Fold the top right corner down to meet the bottom left corner.

Step 9: Unfold previous step.

Step 10: Fold the bottom left corner to meet the centre point.

Step 11: Repeat previous step for remaining corners.

Step 12: Fold the paper in half from bottom to top.

Step 13: Fold the right edge (top layer only) towards the left, following along the existing middle crease. Then squash fold it down to form a square.

Step 14: Flip your paper over from left to right and repeat previous step.

Step 15: Making sure the open side is away from you, fold the left and right corners (top layer only) in towards the middle crease (stopping slightly away from the crease).

Step 16: Flip your paper over from left to right and repeat previous step.

Step 17: Fold the left edge (top layer only) to the right.

Step 18: Flip your paper over from left to right and repeat previous step.

Step 19: Fold the bottom right and left edges (top layer only) in slightly.

Step 20: Flip your paper over from left to right and repeat previous step.

Step 21: Using a pair of scissors, cut a small hole (1-2mm) at the bottom of the tulip head (where the folded edges meet).

Step 22: Gently open out the tulip head.

Step 23: Using a pencil or chopstick, curl the tips of the tulip head down. Set aside.

Making the stem and leaf

You will need: 2 pieces of green colored paper. For a tulip head that is made with 6 inches x 6 inches (15cm x 15cm) paper you will need 5 inches x 2.5 inches (12 x 6cm) sized green sheets of paper.

To make it easier to make the stem, you can use a craft stick or wooden skewer.

Step 1: Take 1 of the green papers. Arrange the paper to sit slightly on a diagonal and have the color side facing down.

Step 2: Place the craft stick (or skewer) slightly above the bottom left corner of the paper.

Step 3: Wrap the paper firmly around the craft stick and then continue rolling the paper around the stick until you nearly reach the end of the paper.

Step 4: Apply some glue at the open end of the paper and then roll the paper over the remaining paper. Allow the glue to dry and remove the craft stick.

Step 5: Now we will make the leaf using the remaining green sheet of paper. Arrange the paper to sit vertically with the colored side facing down.

Step 6: Fold the paper in half from left to right.

Step 7: Unfold previous step.

Step 8: Fold the top left and top right corners in to meet the middle crease.

Step 9: Once more, fold the top left and right corners in to meet the middle crease.

Step 10: Repeat the previous step.

Step 11: Fold the bottom left and bottom right corners in to meet the middle. This will be the bottom of the leaf. Set aside.

Putting It All Together

Step 1: Using scissors, cut 4 deep and evenly spaced slits (about 1cm) into the top of the stem.

Step 2: Using your fingers, spread out the slits.

Step 3: Apply some glue to the undersides of the slits.

Step 4: Insert the stem into the tulip head by placing it through the small hole you cut into the head. Press down the glue on the stem to the tulip head to secure it. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 5: Apply some glue to the bottom side of the leaf.

Step 6: Wrap the bottom side of the leaf around the stem (the position is up to you) below the tulip head. Hold the leaf in place while the glue dries.

Step 7: Completed paper tulip.
