Skill Level
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Easy)
Materials Needed
- Square paper: You can use any sized square paper, such as 6”x 6” (15cm x 15cm) to make different sized stockings.
- Type of paper: Light to medium-weight paper (70-120 gsm) works best for easy folding. Choose festive wrapping paper, colored paper, or patterned paper for a holiday feel.
Note: We used a 6x6-inch (15cm x 15cm) sheet for our origami Christmas stocking, but feel free to adjust the size for larger or smaller stockings.
Instructions
Step 1: Start with the color you want the stocking to be facing up. The color on the back will become the “strip” of the stocking.
Step 2: Fold a narrow strip along the lower edge. The thickness of this strip depends on the size of paper you are using. If you are using paper that is 6” x 6” (15cmx15cm), you could make your strip about 0.39“- 0.60” (1 cm – 1.5cm).
Step 3: Flip the paper over from side to side. The strip you made earlier should be horizontal along the lower edge of the paper.
Step 4: Fold the paper in half, bringing the left edge to the right edge.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.
Step 6: Rotate the paper 90 degrees, the strip you folded previously should be on the right.
Step 7: Fold the top and bottom edges to the centre.
Step 8: Fold the top left corner and bottom left corner to meet the centre.

Step 9: Fold the left corner to meet the inner edges of the flaps made in the previous step.
Step 10: Take the left edge and fold across to the right, bringing it slightly over the right edge.
Step 11: Bring the upper layer back towards the left, and make a vertical pleat in the paper.
Step 12: Rotate the paper so that the narrow strip sits at the top.

How to Turn Your Stocking into a Garland
To create a beautiful garland, fold several origami stockings in various colors and patterns. Use a piece of twine or ribbon to string them together, spacing them evenly.
Hang your garland above your fireplace, along your walls, or in doorways for a festive touch.
You might like to alternate your garland by using these cute origami Santa hats as well as the stockings when marking a garland.
How to Turn Your Stocking into an Ornament
To turn your origami stocking into an ornament, make a small hole at the top of the stocking. Then simply attach a piece of string or ribbon to the top cuff.
Hang it on your Christmas tree or gift it as a special decoration.
Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them
Thick paper: Using thick paper can make it difficult to fold, especially if you are making smaller stockings, so stick to lighter paper if you want to make smaller stockings.
