Materials Needed

One square sheet of paper (preferably lightweight cardstock for sturdiness)

Paper Size Options

  • 6x6 inches (15cm x 15cm): For a small box.
  • 8x8 inches (20cm x 20cm): For a medium box.

Paper Type & GSM

A lightweight cardstock (around 100-120 GSM) is ideal for sturdiness while ensuring easy folding.

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want your box to be facing down. Arrange it to sit like a diamond.

Step 2: Fold the bottom point to meet the top point.

Step 3: Unfold previous step.

Step 4: Fold the left point to meet the right point.

Steps 1 to 4 for folding a square origami box.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.

Step 6: Fold each of the corners in to meet the middle.

Step 7: Unfold previous step.

Step 8: Fold the top corner to meet the middle.

Steps 5 to 8 for folding a square origami box.

Step 9: Fold the bottom corner to meet the top edge.

Step 10: Fold along the line shown in the picture. You do not want to fold the paper completely here, just along the line.

Step 11: Unfold the paper completely.

Steps 9 to 11 for folding a square origami box.

Step 12: Repeat steps 8 to 11 for remaining corners.

Step 13: Flip your paper over so the color side is up.

Step 14: Fold the bottom edge to meet the top edge.

Step 15: Unfold previous step.

Steps 12 to 15 for folding a square origami box.

Step 16: Fold the left edge to meet the right edge.

Step 17: Unfold previous step.

Step 18: Flip your paper over.

Step 19: Lift the corners of your paper to form a "plus" shape in the middle of your paper.

Steps 16 to 19 for folding a square origami box.

Step 20: Refold the creases you made along the line in steps 8 to 12 and press them flat.

Step 21: It's time to close the box. Fold down the flaps on top of each other. You will need to start from the top flap and work in a clockwise direction.

Step 22: When you get to the last flap (the one on the left), tuck it into the other flaps instead of placing it on top. Completed box.
