Skill Level
★☆☆☆☆ (Very Easy)
Materials Needed
- 1 square sheet of paper (origami paper, patterned paper, or cardstock for sturdier bags)
Paper Size | Final Bag Size | |
Small Bag | 5 inches x 5 inches (12 cm x 12 cm) | 2 inches (5 cm) in length x 1.5 inches (4 cm) wide |
Medium Sized Bag | 6 inches x 6 inches (15 cm x 15 cm) | 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length by 2 inches (5 cm) wide |
Large Bag (recommended to use lightweight cardstock) | 10 inches x 10 inches (25 cm x 25 cm) | 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) in length by 3.5 inches (9 cm) wide |
Instructions
Step 1: Start with the color you want your bag to be facing up.
Step 2: Fold the bottom edge up slightly. How high you fold the bottom edge up depends on the size of paper you are using. If you are using 6 inch x 6 inch (15cm x 15cm) paper, we recommend folding the bottom edge up by about 0.60 inches (1.5 cm).
Step 3: Flip your paper over, making sure that the edge you just folded sits on the left.
Step 4: Fold the bottom edge up slightly past the halfway mark. It can help if you measure the length of your paper and make a small mark at the halfway point (this will be 3 inches (7.5cm) if you are using 6 inch (15cm) square paper).

Step 5: Fold the top edge down so that its folded edge sits along the top of the flap you folded in the previous step.
Step 6: Tuck the top layer of the paper into the bottom layer along the folded strip on the left.

Step 7: Fold the right edge to meet the left edge.
Step 8: Unfold previous step.
Step 9: Tuck the right edge into the folded strip on the left.

Tips For Success
- Use thinner paper for crisp folds – Thicker paper may require extra pressing to stay closed. However, if you are making a large gift bag, we recommend using light weight cardstock so that your bag is sturdier.
- Add stickers, stamps, or ribbons for a personal touch.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them
- Paper not staying closed? Ensure all folds are pressed firmly so the bag holds its shape.
- Using too thick paper? If the bag doesn’t fold neatly, try a slightly thinner paper.
- Bag doesn’t sit flat? Make sure your folds are aligned evenly before finishing.
Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations
- Use red and green for Christmas, pastel colors for Easter, or gold and silver for New Year’s.
- Try pink, red, and white for Valentine’s Day or soft florals for Mother’s Day.
- Wedding Favors – Use metallic or pearl-finish paper for a sophisticated touch.
- Halloween Treat Bags – Black, orange, or spooky patterns make these perfect for handing out candy.
- Personalized Touch – Add name tags, calligraphy, or tiny bows to make them extra special.
