- 7 sheets of square cardstock (lightweight for easy folding yet sturdy for durability)
- Scissors
- Craft Glue
- Pencil
- Ruler
Paper Size Options
Here are some suggested sizes for crafting a hexagon pen holder. Adjust based on the size you need:
- Small Holder: 6 inch x 6 inch (15cm x 15cm) cardstock pieces.
- Medium Holder: 8 inch x 8 inch (20cm x 20cm) cardstock pieces.
- Large Holder: 10 inch x 10 inch (25cm x 25cm) cardstock pieces.
Paper Type & GSM Recommendations
Cardstock: Use 180-200 GSM for a sturdy structure that folds well and holds up over time. If you are making a small holder, you can use origami paper (but just be aware that it won't be as durable as using a thicker paper).
Patterns and Colors: Choose solids, stripes, or floral designs for a personalized look. You could even use reds or pinks to make a Christmas, Mother's Day, or Valentine's Day themed hexagon pen holder.
- Note: While you can use origami paper for this project, we don’t recommend it as you will find your final pen holder will not be as sturdy as it could be. By using a slightly thicker paper like lightweight cardstock, it improves the durability of your pen holder.
Instructions
For this hexagon DIY pen holder, you will need 7 square sheets of paper.
Step 1: Take one of your square papers and place the color you want your holder to be facing down.
Step 2: Fold the bottom edge to the top edge.
Step 3: Unfold previous step.
Step 4: Fold the bottom edge to meet the middle crease.

Step 5: Fold the top edge to meet the middle crease.
Step 6: Unfold previous 2 steps.
Step 7: Rotate your paper 90 degrees.
Step 8: Fold your paper in half, but do not crease all the way. Instead crease only in the middle.

Step 9: Unfold previous step.
Step 10: Fold the bottom left corner to meet its nearest vertical crease.
Step 11: Repeat previous step for remaining corners.
Step 12: Fold the bottom edge up to meet the middle (use the small crease you made in step 8 as a guide).

Step 13: Fold the top edge down to meet the middle.
Step 14: Flip your paper over and arrange it to sit vertically.
Step 15: Fold the bottom edge up following the 1st horizontal crease from the bottom.
Step 16: Repeat previous step for top edge but this time use the 1st horizontal crease from the top.

Step 17: Tuck the bottom edge into the top.
Step 18: Repeat steps 1 to 17 with 5 more sheets of paper. You will end up with 6 individual pieces.
Step 19: Glue the individual pieces together to form a hexagon (keep the little diamond shaped pockets found on each piece facing outward).
Step 20: Using the remaining square sheet, place it with the color you want the bottom of your holder to be facing down.

Step 21: Place the glued pieces on top of the paper, arranging it to sit in the middle of the paper.
Step 22: Trace around the edge of the holder with a pencil or pen.
Step 23: Place the glued pieces aside. Trace around the hexagon shape again, but this time, add 1 cm around each edge.
Step 24: Cut out the hexagon, along the outer edge.

Tips For Success
- Wait for the glue to dry before moving onto the next steps.
- Use cardstock or thicker paper for a more durable pen holder.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them
- Misaligned Base: Ensure the base piece is cut and glued evenly to prevent wobbling.
- Weak Corners: Apply a thin layer of glue evenly along the edges for stronger connections.
- Overly Thin Paper: Avoid using thin paper as it may not hold the weight of pens and other items.
Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations
- Color Themes: Choose pastel shades for a soft look or bold colors for a vibrant touch.
- Decorative Elements: Add stickers, washi tape, or small embellishments for extra flair.
- Themed Designs: Create a holiday version using festive patterns or colors.
