What Is Modular Origami?
Modular origami is a fun and creative style of origami where you use multiple sheets of paper to create one design.
Instead of folding a single piece of paper into a complete shape, you fold several smaller pieces, called modules or units, and then connect them to build the final structure.
The magic of modular origami is that these pieces fit together perfectly, usually without any glue or tape, to form sturdy and beautiful designs.
It’s a great way to make three-dimensional models, geometric shapes, and decorative items like boxes or ornaments.

Instructions
For these triangle modular origami boxes, you will need 3 sheets of square paper of the same size.

Step 2: Fold the top point down to meet the bottom point.
Step 3: Fold the left and right points down to meet the bottom point.
Step 4: Unfold previous step.
Step 5: Fold the bottom point up to meet the top edge.
Step 6: Unfold previous step.
Step 7: Repeat steps 1 to 6 for the remaining 2 sheets of paper.
Step 8: Take 2 of your folded triangles and tuck the sides of one inside the other.
Step 9: On the same 2 pieces, tuck the bottom flap of one of the pieces into the other.
Step 10: Tuck the remaining piece into the 2nd triangle piece like you did in steps 8 and 9.
Step 11: Fold the open edges around so that they meet. Then tuck one side into the other.
Step 12: Completed box. Optional: Depending on the paper you used, you might like to add some glue or double sided tape to the bottom of the box to hold it in place.
Tips For Success
- Choose the Right Paper: For small boxes, use lightweight origami paper. For larger boxes, lightweight cardstock ensures durability.
- Practice First: Before using your final paper, try folding with scrap sheets to perfect the technique.
Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them
- Modules Don’t Lock Properly: Ensure all folds are precise and symmetrical. Misaligned folds can cause the box to fall apart.
- Box is Too Flimsy: If the box collapses, try using thicker paper or recrease the folds to make them sharper.
- Edges Stick Out: Make sure each module is folded tightly and slotted fully into the others.
Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations
- Seasonal Themes: Use red and green paper for Christmas, pastels for Easter, or orange and black for Halloween.
- Party Favors: Create boxes in your event’s color scheme to serve candies, mints, or small trinkets.
- Decorative Patterns: Opt for floral prints, stripes, or metallic finishes for an elegant touch.
- Decorate the paper with stamps, doodles, or stickers before folding for a unique look.
FAQ
Yes! Use larger sheets of paper, such as 8 inch x 8 inch (20 cm x 20 cm), for bigger boxes. Keep in mind that thicker paper or lightweight cardstock works best for larger sizes.
Double-check that your folds are sharp and aligned. Make sure the modules are slotted tightly together for a secure fit.
You can also add a bit of glue or tape to your box to help secure it.
Yes, but line the box with food-safe parchment or tissue paper first if placing unwrapped food items inside such as pretzels.
We don’t recommend using these boxes for wet food products. We also recommend using lightweight cardstock if you are using this for food.
