Step 13: Unfold the paper completely.

Step 14: Arrange the paper so it sits in the position as shown in the picture. To do this, gently pinch the diagonal lines on the outer squares together.

As you pinch the diagonal lines together, it should form a “plus” shape in the middle of the paper.

Step 15: Use a hole punch or a pin to make holes in all the points (formed by pinching the diagonal creases together).

Make these holes at least 0.2” (0.5 cm) away from the top edge).

Step 16: Carefully thread a string or ribbon through the holes.

Tips For Success

  • Use thicker paper: For a sturdier basket, use lightweight cardstock or thicker origami paper.
  • Personalize it: Add small decorations, like stickers or washi tape, to the sides for extra flair.
  • Scale it up: Try using larger paper to create a bigger basket for storing more items.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

  • Weak structure: Thinner paper may not hold its shape well, so opt for sturdier paper if you plan to use the basket for heavier items.
  • Imprecise folds: Make sure your folds are aligned perfectly to ensure the basket holds its shape.

Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations

When making your origami basket, consider using colorful or patterned paper to add personality and style to your basket.

Brightly colored paper is great for festive occasions, while neutral or pastel tones create a more subtle, elegant look.

You can also try using textured paper for a more sophisticated finish, or experiment with recycled paper to give your basket an eco-friendly twist.

The basket can be scaled up or down depending on the size of the paper you use, so don’t be afraid to play around with dimensions to suit your needs.
