Skill Level

★☆☆☆☆ (Very Easy)

Materials Needed

1 standard square paper napkin.

Instructions

Step 1: Typically, paper napkins come folded in quarters. Unfold your paper napkin once so that it is now folded in half as shown. Make sure the folded edge is away from you.

Step 2:  Hold the top layer by the lower right hand corner and carefully bring it over to match the lower left corner. This will make the napkin flatten into a triangular shape. Crease well.

Step 3: Flip your napkin over from left to right and repeat previous step.

Step 4: Rotate your napkin so that it sits as shown.

Step 5: Take the bottom point and begin to loosely roll it up to the top point.

Step 6: Stand the napkin upright and gently release the rolled napkin. Then arrange the folds to sit as you like. Completed spiral napkin fold.

Note: If you find your spiral is not holding, you may need to re roll the napkin again but this time a bit tighter.

Steps 1 to 6 for folding a spiral napkin fold.

Tips For Success

  • Choose sturdy paper napkins for better structure and stability.
  • Practice the fold a few times before setting the table.
  • For extra support, place the spiral in a small glass or cup if needed.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

  • Spiral won't stand upright: Roll tightly and adjust the base to balance the napkin.
  • Edges tear (with paper napkins): Handle gently and avoid over-twisting.
  • Shape looks uneven: Keep your roll consistent from start to finish.

Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations

  • Christmas: Use rich reds, greens, or gold napkins and pair with tiny sprigs of rosemary for a festive touch.
  • Easter: Try pastel colors like lavender, mint, or soft yellow for a fresh spring look.
  • Thanksgiving: Go for warm autumn shades like burnt orange, mustard yellow, or deep brown to complement a harvest-themed table.
  • Weddings & Anniversaries: Crisp white or ivory napkins with metallic accents for a classic, elegant feel.
  • Birthdays & Parties: Bright, bold colors for a cheerful and fun vibe.
