Materials Needed

  • 1 rectangle sheet of paper: Ideal size is 6 inches x 3 inches (15 cm x 7.5 cm).
  • Choose lightweight paper such as origami paper, decorative scrapbook paper, or patterned cardstock.

Paper Size Options:

  • 6 inches x 3 inches (15 cm x 7.5 cm): Makes a bookmark approximately 6 inches (15 cm) long.
  • 8 inches x 4 inches (20 cm x 10 cm): Creates a larger bookmark for bigger books.

Paper Type & GSM Recommendations:

  • Use paper between 70 GSM and 100 GSM for best results. Thicker paper like cardstock is ideal when you are making larger bookmarks.

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want your bookmark to be facing down. Arrange the paper to sit vertically.

Step 2: Fold the top left corner diagonally down to the right.

Step 3: Unfold previous step.

Step 4: Fold the top right corner diagonally down to the left.

Steps 1 to 4 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.

Step 6: Flip your paper over from left to right (keeping the creases you just made at the top).

Step 7: Fold the top edge down to meet the end of the diagonal creases you made in the previous steps.

Step 8: Unfold previous step.

Steps 5 to 8 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 9: Flip your paper over from left to right.

Step 10: Gently push down the centre point. Then bring the upper left and right sides of the paper inward and flatten (following along the existing creases). You will end up with a triangle shape.

Step 11: Bring the bottom edge of the triangle (top layer only) to the top point.

Steps 9 to 11 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 12: Fold the left point down to the middle. At the same time, keep the paper in place at the top.

Step 13: Repeat previous step for the top right point.

Step 14: Fold the left flap over of the right.

Step 15: Fold the left edge to meet the middle.

Steps 12 to 15 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 16: Unfold previous step.

Step 17: Create a diagonal crease along the dotted line shown in the picture.

Step 18: Unfold previous step.

Steps 16 to 18 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 19: Fold the left section back towards the middle, but this time, reverse fold the diagonal crease you made in step 17.

Step 20: Flatten the paper and fold the top right flap back to the left.

Step 21: Repeat steps 14 to 20 for the right side.

Steps 19 to 21 for folding a long origami heart bookmark.

Step 27: Fold the left and right sides of the long strip in to the middle.

Step 28: Fold the bottom left and right corners in to meet the middle.
