Materials Needed

  • Origami paper
  • Bone folder (optional, for sharper folds)
  • Scissors

Paper Size Options

  • Common sizes include 6x6 inches (15cm x 15cm) for small bowls and 12x12 inches (25cm x 25cm) for larger ones.

Paper Type & GSM

  • Use lightweight origami paper (around 70-80 GSM) for easy folding.

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want on the inside of your bowl facing down.

Step 2: Fold the bottom edge to meet the top edge.

Step 3: Fold the top left corner (top layer only) down to meet the bottom edge. ONLY crease in the centre of this fold.

Step 4: Unfold previous step.

Steps 1 to 4 for folding origami star bowl.

Step 5: Fold the bottom left corner up to meet the top edge. Crease only in the centre of this fold.

Step 6: Unfold previous step.

Step 7: Fold the bottom right corner to meet the centre of the creases you just made.

Step 8: Fold the top flap back on itself to meet its outside edge.

Steps 5 to 8 for folding origami star bowl.

Step 9: Fold the bottom edge up on an angle to meet the edge of the flap you made in the previous step.

Step 10: Fold the paper in half backwards and flatten.

Step 11: Cut along the line shown.

Steps 9 to 11 for folding origami star bowl.

Step 12: Unfold the paper. You should now have a pentagon shape.

Step 13: Fold one of the points of the pentagon inward, so that it's folded edge lines up with its outer creases.

Step 14: Repeat previous step for other points. You will now have a smaller pentagon with a star shape in the middle.

Step 15: Repeat previous 2 steps again, but this time also making sure that the folded point is in line with the inner edges of the star shape.

Step 16: Flip your paper over.

Step 17: Fold one of the points towards the top, matching it to the points on either side of it.

Step 18: Unfold previous step.

Steps 15 to 18 for folding star bowl.

Step 19: Repeat previous 2 steps for the other points.

Step 20: Gently pinch the points together to form the star shape.

Step 21: Completed origami star bowl.

Steps 19 to 21 for folding origami star bowl.
