Materials Needed

Standard paper napkins.

Napkin Type: Use sturdy yet foldable paper napkins.

A medium-weight napkin (around 60-80 GSM) works best for this project, as it holds folds well but is still easy to handle. Thin napkins may lose their shape, while thicker ones may be harder to crease neatly.

Instructions

Step One: First make sure your napkin is folded in quarters and arranged in a square. This is normally how paper napkins are in the packet.

Step Two: Making sure the open corners of your napkin are at the bottom (towards you), fold it in half, bringing the top edge to the bottom edge.

Step Three: Fold the napkin in half, bringing the right edge to the left edge.

Step Four: Unfold previous step.

Steps 1 to 4 for folding Christmas tree napkins.

Step Five: Hold the top layer by the lower right hand corner and carefully slide it over to the lower left corner.

This will allow the napkin to flatten to a triangular shape. Crease to hold the triangular shape.

Step Six: Turn the napkin over from left to right, ensuring the point is on the top edge (away from you).

Step Seven: Repeat step 5, creating a triangle.

  • For an extra festive look, consider using two-tone napkins or napkins with a metallic finish to mimic the sparkle of a Christmas tree.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

Mistake 1: Using overly flimsy napkins.

Choose medium-weight napkins that can hold their shape well after folding.

Mistake 2: Creases not holding.

Press down firmly on each fold. It is also possible you are using a napkin that is too thin.

Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations

Experiment with napkins in various shades of green to resemble real Christmas trees, or opt for red and gold for a more festive, holiday-themed look.

You can even add small decorative elements like paper stars or mini ornaments to the top of the folded napkin for extra flair.

Try using printed napkins with snowflakes, ornaments, or other holiday patterns for added detail.

FAQ

Can I use cloth napkins instead of paper?

Yes, but paper napkins are easier to fold, especially for beginners. Cloth napkins may require ironing to keep folds crisp.

How long does it take to fold each napkin?

Each napkin takes about 3-5 minutes to fold, depending on your experience.
