Materials Needed

One square sheet of paper (origami paper or any sturdy paper). Cardstock works well for bigger boxes.

Paper Size Options

  • 6x6 inches (15cm x 15cm): For a small box.
  • 8x8 inches (20cm x 20cm): For a medium box.

Paper Type & GSM

Lightweight cardstock (around 100-120 GSM) is recommended for durability while maintaining ease of folding.

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want your box to be facing down.

Step 2: Fold the bottom edge to the top edge.

Step 3: Unfold previous step.

Step 4: Fold the right edge to the left edge.

Steps 1 to 4 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 5: Unfold previous step.

Step 6: Fold the bottom edge to meet the middle crease.

Step 7: Fold the top edge to meet the middle crease.

Step 8: Unfold paper completely.

Steps 5 to 8 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 9: Fold the bottom edge to meet the 1st horizontal crease from the top.

Step 10: Unfold previous step.

Step 11: Fold the top edge to meet the 1st horizontal crease from the bottom.

Step 12: Unfold previous step.

Steps 9 to 12 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 13: Fold the top corners in to meet the 2nd horizontal crease from the top.

Step 14: Fold the bottom corners in to meet the 2nd horizontal crease from the bottom.

Step 15: Flip your paper over and arrange it so the creases run vertically.

Step 16: Fold the bottom edge to meet the middle crease.

Steps 13 to 16 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 17: Fold the flap you made in the previous crease down to meet the bottom edge.

Step 18: Lift the bottom flap slightly and flatten the 2 triangles found on either side of the flap (see picture). Once flattened, it should form a rectangle.

Steps 17 to 18 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 19: Repeat steps 16 to 18 for the top.

Step 20: Flip your paper over from left to right.

Step 21: Bring the bottom flap from the back to the front, as you do so, you will need to concertina (accordion) fold it's edge to meet the line shown in the picture. To do this, you will fold the flap back on itself slightly when you bring it to the front.

Steps 19 to 21 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 22: Rotate your paper 180 degrees and repeat previous step for the other flap.

Step 23: Lift the top flaps 90 degrees.

Step 24: Lift the left edge of the paper up and inward along the 2nd crease from the left. The sides of the box should start to collapse on themselves.

Step 25: Repeat previous step for the right edge.

Steps 22 to 25 for folding a rectangle origami box.

Step 26: To close your box, slip 1 of the flaps inside the triangular pocket found on the other. Or, you could use some ribbon or washi tape.
