If you're after a quick and festive paper project, this origami beanie is a fun and easy one to try.

Using just a single square sheet of paper, you can fold a charming little winter hat — no glue or cutting needed.

It's a flat model, which makes it great for adding to greeting cards, gift tags, or even a winter-themed paper garland.

This simple fold is perfect for kids and beginners, and can easily be customized with stripes, patterns, or even a little pom-pom drawn on top!

It’s a fun seasonal project to do at home, in the classroom, or even as part of DIY holiday decor.

Great for Christmas, winter birthdays, snow day activities, and anywhere you'd like to add a touch of cozy charm.

Skill Level

★☆☆☆☆ (Easy)

Materials Needed

  • 1 square sheet of paper (note: 6 inch (15 cm) square paper makes a beanie that is about 3 inches x 2.5 inches (7 cm x 6.5 cm).

Optional: markers, stickers, or a white pencil for decorating

Instructions

Step 1: Start with the color you want your beanie to be facing up.

Step 2: Fold the bottom edge up slightly. The thickness of this is up to you. This will become the beanie’s ribbing.

Step 3: Flip your paper over from left to right.

Step 4: Fold the left edge towards the right so that it sits at about the halfway mark.

Step 5: Fold the right edge towards the left so that it slightly overlaps the left flap you folded in the previous step.

Step 6: Tuck the right flap into the left at the bottom.

Step 7: Fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge.

Step 8: Tuck the top edge you just folded down in the previous step into the bottom.

Step 9: Fold the left and right edges (above the ribbing) in slightly on a diagonal. The angle and depth of these folds are up to you (just make sure you have a bit of a point at the top). This will shape your beanie’s sides.

Step 10: Fold the top down slightly to form a more defined point.

Step 11: Flip your beanie over from left to right. Completed beanie. Optional: decorate as you like with markers or stickers.

Steps 7 to 11 for folding an origami beanie.

Tips For Success

  • Use double-sided paper to get a contrast between the hat and the trim (ribbing)
  • Draw on a little pom-pom or knit texture with markers or pens
  • Make several and string them together for a cute winter garland
